The class looked at the steel wool on March 24th. We left all of the samples the way they are described and looked at them again on the 25th of March. Before we looked I asked the students what they thought had happened to each one. The ones in water they said probably rusted. The ones with the Gain dishwashing soap they thought probably hadn’t rusted as bad. The steel wool in the covered Petri dish with water once again they said rusted. The uncovered steel wool with water they said had probably evaporated and rusted. The students thought if you used gold fiber with water it wouldn’t work due to the materials that are in gold are different from the steel fibers. They couldn’t think of any other materials to use in place of the steel wool. This experiment was done with my third graders. I was pleased with their answers before we looked at the samples the next day.
